I volunteer because …

I believe in the idea that with great blessings come great responsibilities. I want to do what I can to help alleviate social suffering.

I joined the Action Team because …

It is a direct and concrete way of enhancing the sense of community within our school and raising awareness of social needs.

What inspires me about Major League baseball players who support the Action Team …

Despite their busy lifestyles, they make time for community service and they realize the importance of volunteering.

How volunteering with the Action Team benefits me …

I enjoy working with friends and Mr. Ludzia (our teacher sponsor) in a joint effort to achieve a specific goal and support community building within our already tight-knit school.

How I benefit my community as an Action Team Captain and volunteer …

We are planning and organizing creative activities for students, such as a Home Run Derby in April. The price of entry is nonperishable food items. Our goal is to also obtain local business sponsors. By doing this we hope to enhance community [spirit], not only within the school but within the city as well.

As an Action Team Captain, what I tell other teens to encourage them to volunteer …

I find that the best way to encourage other teenagers to volunteer is simply to become involved in an activity myself. Actions are a more effective way of promoting service.

My favorite volunteer activities …

I participate in a Mission Honduras group that operates schools for impoverished children. I have traveled to Honduras twice to volunteer at the mission. I was able to learn about another culture while giving service. I am also part of a group [recruited by the Santa Fe Action Team] that provides meals at a local homeless shelter, which I find very worthwhile.

My volunteer goals and future plans as a Players Trust Scholarship winner…

This summer, I intend to continue my volunteer service at the homeless shelter. I am grateful to receive this Players Trust Scholarship to help pay the cost of college tuition. I am unsure which school I will attend as several applications are still pending. I plan to major in International Relations/International Business and perhaps minor in Art. Wherever I attend college, I plan to seek out new volunteer opportunities.

What’s in my iPod …

I have a very eclectic iPod. I like to listen to different kinds of music depending on what kind of mood I am in.

My favorite baseball player …

I admire athletes who are not only physically strong but also play with intelligence and live their life with character. Greg Maddux was a smart and consistent player who exemplified these qualities.
