Moving parts and moving on
By Frederick Scarf, University of California-Berkeley
I thought that I had to separate my worlds—college, the nonprofit foundation I started, friends, etc—until I took an art class.
An assignment had us create art showing the idea of entropy, which is a measure of disorder in a closed system. After serious thought about how I've caused entropy in the world, I thought about what I'm doing outside of my classes.
My nonprofit organizes proms for teens with cancer who may not live long enough to attend their own prom. We've organized two proms in my hometown of Los Angeles, and we are currently organizing our first prom in San Francisco. This is a challenge for me because I've never worked with anyone in San Francisco: I don't know anyone at the hospitals or charities who I can work with to mobilize patients to the prom. I don't know any caterers, DJ's, magicians or photographers.
For my project, I've decided to film this journey so my peers can see how to put all these moving parts together so teens with cancer can have a chance to dance. So far, I've filmed a board meeting and a board of adviser going to meet with someone from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I also used a clip of our last prom on the news and some pictures. This project has really allowed to me bring my worlds together for the better.
Since this is my last post, I want to say that I had a great year. I've met people who I hope to see at me wedding. My roommate and I have nothing in common, which enabled us to become very close. My parents didn't go crazy without me and dress our dog Frank up in my clothes (though, we do like to make him wear our glasses. It makes him look smart!)
My two cents for those entering college next year is to take a chance—academically, socially, romantically. College is a place where so much is offered to you so take advantage of all the wonderful resources.
